Biography

Dr. Abbasi joined the Academia, as lecturer, soon after his graduation in Mechanical Engineering in 1975. He completed his Masters in Production Management and Manufacturing Technology from Strathclyde in 1980 and Ph.D. in Metallurgy from Sheffield City in 1983. He returned to join Mehran University as Associate Professor and attained the position of Professor in 1985. He is amongst the pioneers who established Mehran University developing the departments of Metallurgy and Mining and also Mehran University Institute of Science and Technology Development. He remained as Director of the Institute and Chairperson of the Departments. He was the first Advisor on Student Affairs.
Dr. Abbasi with a strong academic background has profound experience in the Industry. He helped establish Al-Abbas Sugar Mills in 1993 as Deputy Managing Director. He remained as Deputy Managing Director Sui Southern Gas Company, the 2nd largest Gas Utility Company of Pakistan (1995-99). Vice President Metal Manufacturing Company Tucson, USA (2001-09). Managing Director Sui Southern Gas Company (2010-11). Managing Director UW Group of Companies (2011-13) and now the first Vice-Chancellor of Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi since March 21, 2013.

Abstract

Demystifying the Disrupting Technologies for Effective Virtual Assessments

Institutions around the world have experienced an almost sudden shift to online learning in an effort to curtail the spread of COVID19 and cope up with the preventive SOPs. The abrupt paradigm shift in teaching approach has come with a toll. Multiple challenges raised, how to balance real-time teaching with asynchronous learning and how to support faculty and students along the new norm, how to carry out fair online assessments This talk will explore how the available tools for online assessments are not sufficient, what are the challenges of online assessments in Pakistan, and how disrupting technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and digital transformation can be exploited to overcome the challenges. The talk will be concluded with the findings and recommendations with an aim to help the policymakers to decipher the apprehensions of stakeholders and to integrate the online assessments successfully into our higher education system in a standardized and homogeneous manner.
