Multiphysics Particle-Fluid Interactions

Our research advances the development of coupled computational frameworks that integrate the Finite Element Method (FEM), Discrete Element Method (DEM), and Immersed Boundary Methods (IBM) for simulating complex particle-laden flows and granular-fluid interactions. These multiphysics problems arise across diverse domains—from sediment transport and debris flows in geomechanics to fluidized bed reactors in chemical engineering and cellular mechanics in biophysics.

A core challenge we address is the accurate resolution of hydrodynamic forces on individual particles while maintaining computational tractability for systems containing thousands to millions of discrete elements. Our implementations within the LAMMPS framework incorporate volume exclusion effects, lubrication corrections, and momentum exchange formulations that ensure physical fidelity across length scales. We are particularly interested in numerical stability, coupling algorithm efficiency, and validation against experimental benchmarks. This research group maintains open positions for motivated students and researchers interested in high-performance scientific computing and multiscale simulation methods.
