Climate Change: A Global Crisis with Unequal Burdens
At the 1st International Conference on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability (ICCCE), Prof. Dr. Tehmina Nangraj, Vice Chancellor of Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University Sukkur, highlighted Pakistan’s climate crisis:
Despite contributing just 0.9% to global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan faces severe climate impacts: Heatwaves, Rising sea levels, Floods, Infrastructure damage, Economic losses, Biodiversity threats, and Health crises.
Who’s Responsible? Major contributors like China, the USA, and the EU have high emissions but better adaptive capacities, while Pakistan’s geographic location and reliance on natural resources amplify its vulnerability.
Solutions & Climate Justice Developed nations must honor their $100B annual climate finance pledge to support developing countries. Technology transfer and green solutions are essential for adaptation and resilience. Advocate for a Loss and Damage Fund to compensate nations like Pakistan for irreversible climate losses.
“Climate justice isn’t charity; it’s a moral obligation,” said Dr. Mangan. Let’s unite for a sustainable, equitable future!
